    — taeil looks up, the hand holding onto his bag tightening. nervous energy pools in his stomach, making his heart drop its pace a few times as he rakes his brain for some casualty, anything he can cling onto to not seem affected in the slightest. it doesn’t help that the duplicity he ran away from is still here, clear in kyungsoo’s sweet eyes. 

   ❛ we had a surprise party at kiha’s apartment after practicing. you know, to celebrate the start of the tour in a few days, ❜ he answers, averting his gaze to the door behind kyungsoo’s tall frame. taeil fishes for his keys from a pocket in his bag and opens it, heart thundering. ❛ i was going to message you just now. ❜

   it’s futile. kyungsoo keeps looking at him like he has spotted the lies slipping through his teeth without having to try too hard. it all could be his imagination yet it doesn’t make it any less irritating — that kyungsoo sees these things and then says others that sound like one thing and feel like they mean something else. this whirlwind of secrecy and things not meant to be said are breaking him. 

   as he makes his way inside, he catches a whiff of kyungsoo’s perfume, the one he adores. he’s struck with this need that clogs his lungs and makes his hands sweat. he wants to hug him as he does often, he wants to go and hug him and kiss him and break him— he lingers at the entrance, a pink tongue wetting pink lips that feel too dry. ❛ come on, it’s cold outside, ❜ he moves to the side, waiting until the younger follows through.

   he hates that silence grows painful between them. hates that this step from each other feels so uncertain —the not knowing if kyungsoo will stay or leave, or when each of both actions will happen. he should crack a joke now, say something nice, compliment soo’s look for the night and clap his back or rub it or— anything that doesn’t scream awkward and embarrassed. it’s useless wishing, however. how can he crawl back into the normalcy that was hit repeatedly with actions that never saw completion? that normalcy is cracked and pieces are lying scattered around them, cutting their fingers every time they try to pick them up to fix it.

   taeil takes a breath, about to say something before hesitation stops him short. the tips of his fingers tickle. it’s too long without having touched kyungsoo, too long since he rested his head on the younger’s shoulder and their thighs touched and limbs tangled into a mess as they tickled each other into submission for the control of the next movie in the queue in taeil’s bed. he misses it but he cannot do this anymore. he cannot act in halves, cannot live with these halves that turn bitter every time the door closes and he’s left behind.

   he has to move on.

   ❛ soo, i— ❜ what? he had a good time but will always want more? he cannot nod anymore through twinges of disappointment every time kyungsoo seems to be getting close enough to kiss but instead chooses to crack a joke and pulls back a second after? he will absolutely murder the next guy who barges in here and dares to kiss him right in front of him? he wets his lips again as he looks up. 

   he doesn’t warn kyungsoo. taeil takes a step forward, reckless, a hazard. he grips onto the collar of his shirt and tugs him down. his nose brushes against kyungsoo's for three seconds that feel like a lifetime. dark caramel eyes are searching for a moment, pupils dilating and heart racing. ❛ i keep thinking about you. ❜

  ❛ please don’t be in love with someone else. ❜

    Taeil stares, incredulity filling his expression. Behind him, there’s the world he has been submerging himself in. These coworkers who appreciate dancing as much as he does, these comrades who don’t push to know the things he doesn’t want to reveal, this man who likes him and has told him so, an easy smile and no shame or fear clouding his eyes. The choice should be so very obvious, taking what’s safe; finally, give himself some peace and venture into a new path with less heartbreak and no secrets. 

   ❛ why? ❜ he asks instead, small fingers pressing into the younger’s shoulders. His heart beats madly inside his chest, a prey upon knowing its end is awaiting with claws wide open. ❛ You can be with somebody else but I can’t? ❜ he pushes instead of running away and hiding. Kyungsoo looks at him in that way and then turns around to kiss someone else goodbye. It breaks Taeil as much as seeing him turning his back on him did that day the older took a flight to Japan six months ago. ❛ What wrong did I do to you that you think I don’t deserve to love again? ❜
